Do you have a tendency to eat out of boredom? Picture yourself munching on something to kill time or simply while you’re seated in front of the TV. And you don’t know how it happened, but you realize that all of a sudden the bag of chips is empty. Then you remember you were watching something stupid just to occupy your mind and munching away. Or, maybe, you just can’t stand it when you have nothing to do, and chewing gives you a sense of taking action. Well, read on if you want to learn how to refrain from eating mindlessly once and for all. You’ll soon discover that the culprit may not be what you suspect.

Most people will tell you that to stop eating when bored you have to practice mindfulness or just get busy. It’s sound advice, but usually the recommendations involve breathing deeply, drinking water, going for a walk, calling a friend, or something like that. These tips may not be too handy once you’ve reached what I call a “boredom climax.” I recommend practicing being present every moment of your life, and I’ll show you exactly how…

Practice being present to yourself daily

So how do you become mindful. I usually ask my clients to practice a very quick and easy meditation technique: placing their hand on their heart a few minutes a day each day. This technique will give you two things: You will feel more relaxed and more focused at the same time. Your tendency to eat mechanically will diminish with practice. It’s just impossible to eat out of boredom and be fully present to yourself simultaneously.

Practicing mindful eating is just not enough. You have to aim bigger, i.e., you have to practice mindful living. That’s how to stop eating when bored, along with any other compulsive behaviors.

After a little practice, you’ll be able to be present to yourself while walking or shopping and even while interacting with others. Once presence has become your normal state of being, boredom becomes just a signal that you have to practice being present again.

Are you really eating from boredom? Or could it be stress, frustration, or something else?

While writing this article, I realized that I haven’t felt bored for ages. I can be weary, impatient, frustrated, nervous, or one of many other emotional states, but not bored. I’m pretty excited with what I do and the life I have. I remember that when I was not happy with my life, I would get bored at work or just waiting at home. Now that I look closer, I see that boredom was actually hiding other feelings, like dissatisfaction, powerlessness, fear, and even a sense of impending doom.

I was not happy with my relationship, or my life, but I was doing nothing about it. I had given up on me, my dreams and aspirations, so I had nothing to do and nothing to look forward to. I’m not saying you need to have a perfect life to stop eating out of boredom. Actually, the solution is quite simple; and eliminating boredom out of your life is a radical and permanent solution to your eating problem.

Question the feeling:

Ask yourself: Is it really boredom? Is it true that I’m bored? And wait for the first answer to come. Then listen to the first thing that comes to mind. Try not to think too hard; just let the thought rise up to the surface of your consciousness, and observe it.

Could it be stress?

If you’re stressed, can you do something about it? If you can take action to make yourself feel better, do it Plan it in your calendar and immediately take a step towards it. Make an appointment. Call someone. Be committed to your well-being. This will give you a sense of personal power and self-confidence. This will make you relax and feel excited.

If no immediate action can relieve your stress, you can either focus intensely on some activity or practice a stress-relief technique. I love EFT and the Sedona method; these are my two favorite stress busters. They just work so quickly and well together. I have developed a whole method that will take you from being stressed out to gaining back a sense of control in a matter of a few minutes. Right now, you can get similar benefits practicing these techniques on your own. You can practice both at work during a break, or you can make it a daily routine so that your stress levels stay down at all times.

Why you’re bored, and why that makes you eat:

I believe you create boredom by numbing your emotions. Unfortunately, you still feel something so you’ve got to suppress that too. Your subconscious has decided that eating is the right option. You have a fully functioning system to keep you away from your feelings as much as possible.

You suppress your emotions; this creates boredom or uneasiness; and to suppress that, you eat. It may seem like a perfect solution. But if you’re reading this, you’re probably not happy with it.

How you stop this once and for all

If you are serious about stopping “boredom eating,” you have to find new effective ways to handle your emotions. It may be a bit uncomfortable at first.

I know from experience that when I tried to improve my self-esteem by taking action outside my comfort zone, I was paralyzed with fear. I didn’t know how to handle my emotions other than letting them overwhelm me completely. I remember not being able to go to auditions while modeling because my anxiety levels were so high they kept me in bed completely drained out. I hated it and wanted a way out, but I didn’t know how.

Eating when bored is one of the many ways to stay confined within your comfort zone. Your comfort zone is what is familiar and feels safe.

A more comprehensive quote would be:

Your personal power starts at the end of your comfort zone, so you’d better get happy being uncomfortable.

I’m saying it this way because expanding your comfort zone is the fastest gateway to achieve your dream life and eliminate boredom, crappy feelings, cravings, and compulsive behavior of all kinds.

I can’t explain everything here, but once you know how to do this you’ll become the biggest boredom killer who has ever lived on the planet, and you’ll feel excited to discover how much more you can do!

Suppressing your boredom in the moment with some unproductive action, like eating, is within your comfort zone. Practicing personal presence, EFT, the Sedona method, and take new actions to create a life that satiates your heart and feeds your soul that are outside of your comfort zone. That’s how to stop eating from boredom for good though.

Start thinking about how you can make your life less stressful and more pleasant. Take a small new step every day, and build from that.

  • Thank you for information. I have ate out of boredom for a long time, and it’s like I guess something that comforts me and I think the reason I do it half the time is stress. I’m just going to try to make a willful decision to stop because 1 it is wasteful 2 it’s not good for body and 3 makes me feel bad about myself

      Others just hit rock bottom and decided they never want to experience that pain again.
